Best buddies...

(Note another post from this past summer... here Isabelle is around 6 months old)...
Michael and Isabelle are great friends, actually both boys are to Isabelle, but I find Michael spending more time playing with his sister.  The other day I casually watched them interact and play together.  It is so fun to see the bond they have with each other and how cautious, loving and protective he is of his baby sister.

I had to add this picture in.  Doesn't this just hurt to look at?  It must not hurt though because Isabelle does it all the time.  In fact, it is one of her most favorite sleeping positions.  To me,it hurts.
Our friends let us borrow one of those play things (like the term) that has a mat and a an arch with toys hanging off of it.  Isabelle loved it and spent hours playing with the toys on it.  Michael would like to play too, so he'd lay underneath it and talk to her as she'd pick up each toy.

Here the two of them decided to pose for mom's picture request.
But Michael still couldn't take his eye off of her. I love this picture.  He's so proud to be a big brother.
As I said earlier, good buddies!
And a kiss on the cheek just to let her know he loves her.

Family Photos for real....

In April we had our first professional family photos taken.  Ashley West, a friend of a friend and also a mommy blogger graciously accepted the difficult task of taking our pictures.  Being that some of us (ahem, me) are not the most photogenic and given the fact it was prom central at the place where they photos were taken, and over 100 degrees, we think Ashley did a great job and if anyone is looking for a photographer, we highly recommend her.

Thanks so much Ashley! and if you'd like to contact Ashley for any photography needs, you can check out her website at: http://www.ashleywestphoto.com/

Understanding God's plan...

Yesterday I learned some devastating news and I have to admit my heart is heavy just thinking of what they must be going through.

Before welcoming Isabelle into our lives, I had only known what it was like to love a child.  When Gabriel and Michael came to us, I felt immediate love and a connection that will forever bond us.  However when we became parents to Isabelle it was different, not better nor worse, just different and just as special.  Becoming a parent to a baby is a magical experience I am so extremely thankful for.  Caring for a tiny being that is utterly and completely dependant upon you for life, brings with it a bond, a connection that is something I believe sent directly from God.

And that is why, when I heard the news yesterday that another mother I know, was grieving the loss of her 5 month old only child, my heart broke and continues to ache for what horrific pain she and her husband must be going through.  A met this mother several years ago when our life paths crossed and we connected then over topics related to our profession.  Although she worked in a different office, little did I know that our paths would cross again. Soon after I changed jobs, our paths reunited when we learned we were working for the same school.  And then we were given the opportunity to attend a conference together where I had the chance to get to know her on a personal level.  I learned about her "real" life, where she grew up, her family traditions, about her husband and about her ultimate desire to become a mother.  Given that we had just adopted Gabriel and Michael I beamed with pride about just how wonderful motherhood really is and that when she became a mother, how I knew she's be a natural. This past January I saw her and she glowed with excitement as she shared she was expecting.  And this September I watched her reciprocate the pride as she showed me a picture of her beautiful baby girl.  She confirmed that motherhood was indeed as great as I said.  I remember feeling true happiness for her, as motherhood was obviously her most prized title yet.

And then came the news of her loss, their loss.  A loss I cannot imagine experiencing.  A loss of so much.  A gain of the worst pain possible and why?  I learned that her baby had gotten sick, the common cold, the flu that seems to be everywhere, or what exactly, I'm not sure.  From what I've learned, it wasn't anything more than what most babies get sick with.  Doing what mom's do, she stayed home to be with her baby, rocking her to calm and help the baby sleep.  Moments later after awaking herself, still holding the baby she realized the horrific fear that the baby had passed in her arms.  As I type this the tears roll down my face and I think, why?  Why does this happen?  Why did it happen to her?  I could have just as easily been that mother, for it was only a few weeks ago, I was doing the exact same thing for Isabelle.  When Isabelle was so sick and we learned she had to be hospitalized I felt guilty, how did I fail at doing my basic job as a mother... to care for, to keep safe, to keep our child thriving.

And then I think of what she must be going through.  How does one move on?  How do you ever smile, ever find joy, or go on?  The answers to those questions, I honestly don't know.   All I know is that I am so deeply saddened for them.  I ask God to give her, her husband and their family the strength to go on.  And that not far behind that strength, I hope there is peace.  Peace that God's plan, one we may never understand nor want to accept is why these things happen.  And I pray that they find happiness, the gifts that life brings and the will to enjoy what blessings are still here for them and what await them in the future.

Tonight as I kiss my little ones and tuck them into bed, I am so thankful that I actually get to do it.  For I feel for them who have to look to Heaven to kiss their baby angel Rylee through the starry night sky.

Until next time,

Dad's eyes...

Tonight at dinner we were talking about eye color.  When the boys saw that Isabelle's eyes are blue they said, "Mom is she going to always have blue eyes?"  I said, maybe she will, it looks like they are going to stay blue.  And then I said, "That means Isabelle will be the only one in our family with blue eyes and I'll be the only one with brown eyes."

Then the conversation transitioned to the boys counting how many of each color eyes people in our family have.

Blue: 1
Brown: 1
Red: 0
and then I said, what about blue/green eye color and Gabriel and Michael both raised their hand.  I said, you both have the same color eyes as dad.

Michael then said, "Mom, does that mean I came from dad' tummy?"

I laughed and then said, "No honey, remember boys can't have babies."

Oh he said, "Then where did I come from?  Whose tummy was I in?"
I went on to explain... "Michael you and Gabriel came from the tummy of your birth mom."
Gabriel interjected, "Oh yeah Mom, remember I told you about my other family?"
Yep Gabriel I remember.  And then Michael said, "Was I in sally's (foster mom) tummy?"
I said, "Nope, Michael you were in your first mom's tummy and so was Gabriel"

His face immediately turned to a look of shock and it was obvious he was processing what I had just said. I was expecting him to come back with a series of questions about why he doesn't see his birth mom and questions about what she is like.  Instead, moments later he said, "Mom, if she had Gabriel and me, does that mean she had two tummys?"

Smiling I then went onto explain the science behind pregnancy and that moms can have more than one baby at different times.  Isn't it funny how the boy's questions are so completely different than what we as adults expect or would ask?

Who knew a conversation about eye colors would lead to a discussion about Dad's being pregnant, and moms having multiple stomachs.

Until next time,
Angie

Baby's bath

This is a post writen last summer when Isabelle was just 6 months old...

Baby girl LOVES her bath.  In fact you don't have to take my word for it, her expression and joy is evident in the pictures below.

Please ignore the smudges on the mirror.  The mirror was clean prior to her bath, but baby girl kicks and splashes water EVERYWHERE... hence the smudges all over.

She loves to look at herself in the mirror, smile and then shriek with excitement. Here's her doing just that.

Here comes a wee little bit of water... okay maybe a big bit of water

still happy and as slippery as a wiggle worm.
Still smiling....
and laughing...

I LOVE her expression...

So precious...
and I love her eye lashes....

In deep thought...

and still soo happy.

Until next time,
Angie
