What did you say?

A couple of weeks ago, we were on our way someplace, and I noticed a McDonalds that was in the process of being remodeled.  For some strange reason I stated outloud, "Oh look they are redoing that McDonalds and in a couple of weeks, Ronald McDonald is going to be here to reopen it."  Speaking more to Jarrett, rather than the boys, I waited for his response and it didnt' come.

Instead, Gabriel and Michael, piped in and asked, "Mom, whose that?"
I told them all about Ronald McDonald, actually I told them that he was the one who started McDonalds (even though that isn't exactly the truth) but really I wasn't ready to explain to them what a spokesperson was.  I guess these days, sometimes the quick and simple answer wins out.  After explaining to them that both mom and dad had birthday parties at McDonalds when we were kids and that it was super cool (I know, wouldn't kids these days, be so dissapointed?), the boys were sold.  They HAD to meet this Ronald McDonald person.   As we drove by the McDonalds, the thoughts about Ronald's visit were left behind as something new was on the top of our minds.

Fast forward to Sunday, on our way home from Church.  We were waiting at the stop light when all of a sudden Gabriel asked, "Mom, when are we going to meet Noodle McDoodle?"
Bursting out laughing just at the sound of what he said, Dad and I together asked back, "WHO?"
"You know, Noodle McDoodle, remember, he started McDonalds?"

And after several minutes of laughing about just how funny it sounded, we told him we missed Ronald McDonald's appearance, but that we'd check to see who Noodle McDoodle was and when he'd be appearing in the valley.

Until next time,

Truly an inspiration...

For those who know my family or who follow our blog, you may remember back on November 5, 2010, I posted an update about my sister MaeLyn's boyfriend and the accident he had.  As a quick recap, Aaron and my sister were hunting and the tree stand they were on broke and he fell more than 25 feet out of the tree and landed on his back.

The fall had resulted in him breaking his back and injuring his spinal cord. The doctors told him he was paralyzed from the waist down and it was a very slim chance he would walk again.  For a VERY active, outdoorsmen, the news was/is very devastating.  In addition to that, he had to spend months in the hospital, countless surgeries, complications, battling serious infections, constant severe pain, set backs and, well you name it, Aaron pretty much had to go through it.  Last year around this time he was released from the hospital and continued out patient rehabilitation therapy which seemed to focus on teaching Aaron how to live his new life in a chair.

Then, this past November Aaron's constant back pain (pain that it seemed he just took as a new part of his life), became so bad he went back to the hospital to see if something else was the problem.  He then learned that he would have to undergo yet another round of serious surgeries where they took all of the metal pieces holding his back together apart and rebuild it.  It was obvious it was a set back that weighed heavily on everyone's heart.  And then, when the surgeons opened his back up they found out he had a very serious form of staff infection that has made a home on the hardware in his body.  The doctors were forced to remove all the bolts, pins, screws, and rods holding his back in place for over a 10 days while they tried to kill the infection in his body.  This meant Aaron was required to lay pretty much flat on his back without moving for more than a week and a half.  This is how Aaron spent the Thanksgiving holiday.  After killing the infection and rebuilding his back once again, Aaron recovered and spent the Christmas holiday once again trying to figure out how to rebuild his life.

It was at this point that Aaron was introduced to Euro-Team Physical Therapy, a place in Decorah IA, close to our hometown.  This therapy place, unlike many others that he went to, seemed 100% dedicated to helping Aaron achieve probably his #1 goal.. the goal to walk again.

Although I've heard most of the diagnosis through my sister MaeLyn, I know that Aaron, his family and my sister have heard from many medical professionals, that they should accept the fact that Aaron most likely will be in a wheelchair, and although there is nothing wrong with that and we are all thankful that Aaron is still here, it is clear, that Team Aaron all want/dream/believe his life will be different.

Just a few short weeks ago Aaron started visiting the Euro Team Physical Therapy place and today Aaron shared with us this link.  As I watch the video of Aaron take his first steps, tears roll down my eyes with sincere and utmost happiness. The determination in his heart is apparent on every ounce of his body as he forces one foot in front of the other.  To me, Aaron is truly an inspiration.

I cannot even begin to imagine the battle both physically and mentally that he has experienced for the past year and three months.  I can tell you though that, I do not personally know anyone stronger.

Aaron, I know we've said it for a long time and although we've always believed you can and will walk again, your video today shows me that you should start setting a new #1 goal.  In fact, you should set a lot of goals, because I know you can and will accomplish all that you've ever dreamed possible.

Congratulations Aaron!  Sending you all our love and happiness,

Until next time,
Angie, Jarrett, Gabriel and Michael

Toy Town

We recently took the boys to Toy Town, a local store that has all sorts of pretend toys for kids to enjoy.  As I walked in, I realized just how cool this place would have been when I was Gabriel or Michael's age.  Immediately they were excited and could hardly wait to sign in before entering the play town.

Inside there are full kid-size toys for youngsters to enjoy.  From a hospital, to a police station, a library, a grocery story, pizza place, even a car shop and a house.  Kids can go from one place to another, pretending to be, well, grown ups doing things us adults do on a daily basis.  I had forgotten how much fun playing dress up and pretend is...  good thing the boys have not forgotten. They had a blast...

I wonder how much their gas is a gallon?

Guess it must not be that much, he drives away smiling.

In Gabriel's pretend world, you get to drive your car through the business.

Who needs toys...

What does this look like?

It isn't a trick question... yes, you are correct.  To me, it also appears to be a plain cardboard box.

To Gabriel, it appears to be a great toy.  Originally this box was in the recycle bin in the garage and a few days ago Gabriel asked me if he could have it.  We said yes...

I quietly observed as Gabriel worked independently to create this...
Can you tell what it is?

Why, it is a race car of course...

Oops but wait, he forgot the dash.

okay, now I'm ready to race.

And this race car comes complete with a custome tiny steering wheel.

Super Bowl...

Last night at dinner Dad and the boys were talking about the Super Bowl.   Dad asked Gabriel if he knew what the Super Bowl was and with a glaring look as if to say, "Duh Dad, of course I know what the Super Bowl is", Gabriel responded, "Yes Dad, I know. I know a lot about football."

Almost to challenge him, Dad followed up with the next question..."Gabriel who are the two teams playing in the game?"

Gabriel responded, "The Giants and the Patriots.  Dad, I know a lot about football."

Then, to test him one more time, Jarrett said, "Gabriel what is the name of the quarterback for the New York Giants?"

Sighing and then answering with a sense of arrogance Gabriel responded, "Uncle Nolan."

Until next time,
Angie

PS:  Although Uncle Nolan lives in NYC and may audit the New York Giants financial records, the last time I talked to him he was a CPA and not a NFL quarterback.

A picture for Jack...

The boys like to draw lots of pictures.  I like that they like to sit quietly and draw/color pictures. I like it even more that they like to draw pictures for Dad and I.  Last week when I gave Jarrett the latest batch of pictures for dad's work, Jarrett told me he's running out of places to put them.  I can understand what he means.

Today, since Gabriel was home from school ill, we had lots of opportunities to color and draw pictures.  I let the boys be while they colored and when I came back from changing and folding the next load of laundry, I asked where my pictures were.

To my surprise, the boys said, "We didn't color you any pictures."  We only colored pictures for Jack.  He likes them best.  When I asked if I could see them they said, "Mom we already gave them to Jack."

And as I walked in the living room, where Jack parks himself for the 7 or 8 hours during the day, I saw this...

Yep, I got a picture mom and you didn't...

but I'll sit up so you can see it... it is a picture of me...

but I'm going to keep my paw on it so you don't try to take it.

I'm serious mom... the picture is mine.  I only have to wait almost 2 years to get my first picture from the boys.
Until next time,
Angie

George Washington & John Deere

My aunt and uncle from Iowa, Bob and Barb are here visiting for a few weeks.  Yesterday after church we decided to go out for brunch.  On our way to the restaurant the boys were talking in the back about money and what famous person was on each coin.

Gabriel and Michael were telling Barb that George Washington was on the quarter.
Gabriel said, "George Washington was the first president of the United States."
Proud and impressed that he is actually learning great things at school, I listened attentively at what accurate fact he would proudly share next.  Gabriel continued...

"And did you know he use to work at John Deere?  But that was before he became president."

I looked at Bob who was riding in the front seat, we both smiled and I said, "Guess you learn something new each day."

Until next time,
Angie

Michael's unique sense of style...

Gabriel and Michael are very different when it comes to picking out an outfit.  For Gabriel, he grabs what ever he reaches for first and what ever he can find in a flash to move onto the next thing.  Not Michael.  He carefully and meaningfully plans his outfit, every aspect of his attire.  It doesn't matter if we are spending a Saturday afternoon at home or going to church on Sunday, he wants to always look "handsome."

His definition of what constitutes handsome varies on what is going on.  I appreicate his sense of style and the fact that he likes to look nice.  Honstly I do.  I appreicate that he wants to wear his "adoption suit" every Sunday to church and somedays I think I should let him wear it.  But then I realize it would require me too to dress up (becuase I wouldn't dare wear jeans to church while he wears a suit), and so I convince/persuade, him to wear something else that looks attractive and matches mom's "casual but nice" look.

Given that he is getting older and will be going to Kindergarten this fall, I'm giving him more freedom in choosing his outfits.  Just two weekends ago, while Jarrett and I were packing away the Christmas decorations, we let Michael choose his outfit.  I think we are making progress from where we were a few months ago when he preferred to wear his shirts and sometimes his pants backwards.  I'll let you decide if you think were making progress...

Thankfully our wonderful family and friends continue to help the boy's wardrobe improve and provide great outfits like the following.  Michael's convinced the below outfit is a "Justin Beavers outfit" so he loves it and wants to wear it continuously (or that is, when he's not testing his creativity in putting together his own outfit designs).

Thanks MaeLyn and Aaron!

Until next time,
Angie

Girls...Girls...Girls...

I'm not quite sure when it happened but it has happened.  Gabriel likes girls, pretty girls that is.

On New Year's Eve we went out for dinner at Rustler's Rooste with our visitors and after dinner a couple of them wanted to dance to the band that was playing.  While Michael was 100%, completely entertained with the slide next to the dance floor...

Gabriel was not.  Instead, he was entertained by, well these two girls...
Can you see them back thee?
We all had to laugh because one at a time, each of us began to noticed just how entranced Gabriel was with them.  As the girls (probably 9 or 10 years old) 2-stepped across the dance floor, Gabriel continued to shift to make sure his view was not blocked.  And then when one of our visitors whispered in his ear that he should ask the girls to dance, he immediately became aware that we were all watching him watch the girls, and was embarrassed.  As he ran to my leg for protection from his embarrassment, I asked him what he was thinking.
"Mom, those girls are really pretty.  I like the one with the pink cowboy boots."
"That's nice honey, do you know her?"
"No, Mom, do you know her name?"
But before I could respond no, he was back entranced and had moved onto Dad's lap because he could get a better view of them...

We watched for a good 10 minutes while he watched them danced, and then we decided to move on.  Gabriel was not so ready.  When I asked him if he was ready to go he said, "No!!!!" What do you want to do then Gabriel, do you want to dance?" "No mom, I just want to watch."
After so long, mom decided the girl watching was over and we forced him to break eye contact and leave.

And that isn't the only story that's convinced me he's got girls on his mind. Just last week on the way to school, Gabriel and I were talking and I asked him how he slept. He said good and that he had a good dream. I then asked him what it was about. "Mom, I can't tell you, its inappropriate."
"What do you mean Gabriel? You can tell me what your dream was about."
"No Mom, (smiling bashfully), I can't tell you, it's inappropriate."
and on and on our conversation went about how he couldn't tell me about his dream because he didn't want to say and how he was shy.

Finally, I said, "Gabriel I'll tell you about my dream, if you tell me about yours?" and it worked.
"Mom, you tell me your dream first."
"Okay, Gabriel I dreamed about us going to the snow and how we had a lot of fun." Pretty good dream for just making it up on the spot. :-)
"Wow, mom that's what my dream was about too!" (He's pretty smart.)
Turning around in my seat and looking at him straight in the eye, I asked him, "Nice try honey, what was your dream really about?"
He smiled and said, "Mom, It is inappropriate but I couldn't help it, it was a dream"
I know honey, I'm not going to be mad. We can't control our dreams. Dreams are from thoughts in our mind."
"Okay Mom, my dream was that I was marrying Hannah. You know Hannah, Mom, right?"
Smiling, I said, "Oh that's nice honey. Yes, I do know Hannah"
"Mom, she's the prettiest girl at my school. Mom, we were getting married."
"Oh honey that is nice. I'm glad your dream was nice. How old were you in your dream?"
"Mom we were old like you and dad, so you don't have to worry."
"Oh good" I'm so glad his dream at least allowed him to get past Kindergarten before getting married... and that he was so "old"!

Until next time,
Angie

Look what he's learned now...

Before we know it, spring will be here, followed quickly by summer and then fall again.  This fall Michael will be starting Kindergarten so I've been working with him on certain things to make sure he is as ready as possible.  Yesterday we were working on counting to 100... (we have a long way to go), I tried to motivate him by saying, "Michael if you work on counting to 50, I'll teach you how to tie your shoes."  Just like that he became completely motivated.  And a few minutes later I was showing him how to tie his shoes.

The approach to tying shoes has changed since I learned many years ago.  When I learned we just did one loop followed by the other lace, wrapping around the loop, in the hole and pulling the lace through.  Not anymore.  Thankfully, last year with Gabriel's Kindergarten prep class, we (Gabriel, Dad and I) learned the correct way to teach the art of tying shoes.

Immediately Michael picked up tying and I think after showing him three times how to do it, he had it down.  I thought he might forget in the coming days and that we'd have to have a refresher course in a few weeks or months.  Instead, today when I picked him up from school he said, "Mom, can I tie your shoes when we get home?"

So when we get home, we used Gabriel's shoes and he went to work again.  Here's Michael showing us what we learned, yesterday, without mom having to help or remind him at all... (Oh and never mind the sighs in the background... that's just Gabriel complaining about the amount of homework he has.  Funny thing was I didn't even notice he was doing it until I watched the video myself.  I guess what they say is true... parents can become experts at tuning certain things out.)

Dad and I are very proud that Michael picked up this so quickly.  Sometimes being the second child, you don't get the same attention as the first one when you learn something new.  So we wanted to recognize Michael's effort.

Great job Honey!  Dad and I are proud of you.

Until next time,
Angie

Michael's observance....

Today after picking Michael up from school I asked him how his day was and he said the usual "I don't know."

And then I followed up with my second question of everyday, "What did you learn today?"
Expecting the same answer I usually get every other day, I was surprised when he answered differently.

"Mom, did you know that girls smell sometimes and sometimes they toot*?  That is what I learned today.  Raven told me."

*Toot is our word for passing gas

Trying to contain my laughter, I responded, "Wow that is great honey. I'm glad you're learning so much."

Completely moving on Michael responded, "Mom, do you toot?"

Angie

F1 Race Factory...

While our guests from Iowa were visiting we took them to F1 Race Factory for some adult racing fun...

I'll let the pictures tell most of the story and I think they'd prefer I didn't share how everyone finished...

Trying to find the right sized helmet... was the first challenge.

Excited much?  It is hard to tell but my brother was very excited to race.

While others planed their racing strategy...

my brother gave the competition dirty looks to "try" and intimidate them.

but he ran into a problem when his big head couldn't fit into the helmet.
The before race photo

Ready...Set...GO!!!!
And meanwhile the boys begged and pleaded to let them drive the race cars.  Even though the place has a rule that you have to be older than 10 or 12 to drive, the boys were convinced we could get the employees to bend that rule. Gabriel said, "Mom, maybe if we say please please please they will let Michael and me drive."  And then Michael tried... "See Mom, the helmet fits, I can drive."
But thanks to Grandma we were able to satisfy them.  Grandma and the boys spent some great quality time at the arcade.  And here they were able to race...

Until next time,
Angie

PS:  Jonas, don't you love your big sister who you can always count on to embarrass you?

Hall of Flame...

After Christmas Grandma, Grandpa, Uncle Jonas, Kacey (Jonas' girlfriend) and the employees of their business came out to visit for a few days.  Of the group there were 3 current or retired firefighters so we decided to visit the Hall of Flame museum.  Although from the outside it doesn't look too impressive, once inside we were thrilled and completely impressed with all of the cool firefighter memorabilia and trucks the museum has.  Plus the people working there were super nice and even gave us a personalized guided tour.

We were able to see firetrucks from the late 1800's and even one of the firetrucks they brought down on train from Milwaukee WI to Chicago to help fight the Great Chicago Fire.  The tour guide told us many stories about each of the trucks and even showed us a truck they have from Iowa.  It was really neat and I think everyone enjoyed it.  Although we were limited on time, we didn't get to see everything in the museum so I think we'll be going back again.

For anyone locally who hasn't been there, I'd definitely recommend it.  The boys keep asking us to take them back there.  It may just be because of the "real fireman's suit" (for kids) they have for sale in the gift shop but I think they liked looking at all the cool trucks too!

Until next time,
Angie
